You can't call him that!

Choosing a name for my second son was more challenging than I thought it would be. With my first son I kinda just always knew what I was going to name him, but this time around I just could not think of a name I really wanted my baby to have. Even worse was the fact that his father, my wonderful hubby Derek, vetoed any names I kinda did like. He is definitely more of a traditionalist whereas I wanted something unique.
One day we were having the usual discussion on choosing names when I thought it would be fun to have a look at what the celebs had been naming their children. After a quick google search we came across a site that listed some celebrity children's names and admittedly there were quite a few that seemed completely off the wall. Then we came across Nicholas Cage. He had called his son Kal-el. Mr Cage is a huge Superman fan and Kal-el is the name that was given to "Clark Kent" before he left his home planet to come to earth. How do I know this? Well my hubby and I were also fans of comic superheroes. In our relationship he was Superman and I was Wonderwoman. We would buy each other little gifts with those heroes logos. It was just our thing. I thought calling a little boy Kal-el was actually very cool!

Another thing I should probably mention is that I already knew the baby's gender but my hubby did not. I immediately began to call my bump by the name Kal-el. For months I had been referring to my unborn son as Kal-el. It had become second nature to me. I was buying clothes for Kal-el, toys for Kal-el, blankets and all sorts of baby things for Kal-el. So when my hubby asked closer to the end of my pregnancy what name we were going to choose if we had a boy, I looked at him in surprise and told him that if we have a little boy we will be calling him Kal-el!
"You can't call him that!", he said horrified! "Why can't I? It's my baby! I can call him whatever I want!".
I didn't care what anyone else thought about the names I chose for my own children. There were people I knew that had chosen names for their children that I never would. But that was their decision, and this was mine! So I named my son Kal-el after Superman. And yes, people thought I was mad. And yes, people asked me to repeat it. And yes, people asked me where I got it from. And yes, people asked me what it meant. And yes, the look on the faces of those same people when they realised where I got the name from was often frame worthy. But I don't care.

You see, it's only now that I am realising the importance of his name. It is only now that I am realising just how much of a superhero my little boy is going to have to be. It is only now that I am realising that he isn't the only superhero in this household. We all are.

(I should just point out that we went with Kalel instead of Kal-el just to make it a little less unusual!!!! But for the blogs sake I'll use the hyphen)
